So you’ve seen someone that has caught your eye on Bumble, Tinder, Match, swiped right, the chats been fairly decent, you swap numbers and start whatsapping, you’ve assessed that they are most likely not dangerous (stalked them on FB to check they are real!) and you feel its about time you go on a date and see if you’ve got a real life connection.. Scary stuff…
But the question is… Where do you go in Bournemouth and the surrounding areas?
This is for sure the awkward bit, you want somewhere with a nice chill vibe, somewhere safe, has easy parking and doesn’t get too hectic.
I’ve had a few ‘online’ dates in Bournemouth, some successful and some I’m more than happy to write off (I hate calling them online dates, swiping is just how we millennials meet people these days so lets just call them dates!). So hopefully I can share my experiences with you to help find that perfect venue to at least ease the stress abit.. I usually go for a drink as that’s the safest option when meeting someone new, you can make your own way there and its in a public place if anything goes wrong.
Perfect for cocktails (2 for 1!) on the balcony in the summer of an evening or a nice coffee at any point in the year. You can easily meet outside Aruba as there’s lots of benches and if you walk down the hill you have a while to look around to suss out if your date has arrived. Weekend dates here do work, but bear in mind it gets busy from 10pm in the evenings and the music gets loud and it gets rather busy!
A lovely and sophisticated setting for a nice drink, during the week there’s a chilled out atmosphere so you’ll definitely get a table or boothy thing and at the weekends its a little busier but you have a good crowd here!
Cosy Club, Bournemouth
I love Cosy Club for drinks and for a date its perfect because its an intimate jazzy setting and there’s loads of seating (high tables, low tables you name it) and you also have the option to get some tapas aswell!
Turtle Bay, Bournemouth
Perfect during the week for some chilled cocktails sat up at the bar, I’d recommend going here during the week over the weekend as it gets crazy busy and you don’t want to have the awkward thing of where to sit! Make the most of happy hour from 5-7pm and 10pm – close.
New to Bournemouth, the stables has a huge range of ciders if that’s your choosing! Its located right in the center and has loads of seating.
Slug and Lettuce, Bournemouth
You can’t go wrong with Slug and Lettuce and the one in Bournemouth is lush, great cocktails, lots of different areas to sit in and its pretty! The weekends do get pretty busy and there’s a DJ too which is fun but obviously not the easiest if you wanna chat.
Due to open in Spring 17, I love the Brewhouse in Southbourne, and I reckon the Bournemouth one will have the same vibes, huge range of drinks, (beers!) and also amazing food (burgers!) if you are grabbing some food too.
Circo Lounge, Westbourne & Conto Lounge, Winton
The lounges are fabulous for a first dates, they are really cute and quirky, loads of chilled out seating and you can have a proper good chat and order some tapas if you like! My only thing is that its quite dark in there so it can make you a little sleepy (which doesn’t help if you date is boring too!)
The Libertine, Westbourne
A lovely pub in the heart of Westbourne, you can have a really nice chilled out drink here and even share a pizza if you fancy it. Theres also parking right behind it and buses!
Dancing Duck, Westbourne
Great cocktails, food and vibes. You can have a proper chat in here and spend ages! Happy hour is from 4-8pm which helps too. Check out the garden in the summer!
Camden, Westbourne/Ashley Cross
Always great to pop to Camden for a few drinks, you’ll be able to grab a seat here and chat for ages! Both Westbourne and Ashley Cross are great locations!
The Ox, Ashley Cross
I loveee the Ox, and it feels like a really lush venue to go on a first date, nice and chilled out but with a sophisticated vibe. Foods fairly expensive so bear that in mind!
The Cow, Ashley Cross
The Cow is my go to for any situation, I love it! You can chill here for ages and chat, its always lively, at the weekends its slightly crazy lively and the drinks are great value. In the summer check out the upstairs terrace!
Alternative ideas in the area
Go the arcades on the pier
Do the zipwire
Have Harry Ramsdens on the beach
Go for a beach walk
Play mini golf at Sandbanks or Bournemouth Gardens
Things to remember about online dating
Tell someone where and when you are going and let them know you get there safe
Have a code word that you can quickly text your friends if you get in trouble (ours is Aloha!)
Check out the person before you meet on Facebook or LinkedIn, just to make sure they are who they say they are!
Do be careful with how much you drink, you don’t want anything to cloud your judgement.
Check in with the person on the day to make sure its still going ahead
There might not be chemistry but don’t let it get you down if there isn’t!
If you don’t get chemistry, don’t ghost someone, let them know how you feel
It’s best on a first date to make your own way there and back (don’t get in cars with strangers)
